Zero Easy Chair

“When something obviously new is also familiar you are looking at a classic.”

Design Notes:

Inspired by the Mayan zero,
one of the first cultures to use the mathematical concept of "nought",
this chair is one of our showpieces.
The actual Mayan zero is shaped like an American football with several internal lines.
In our first prototype we converted those
lines into symbolic indentations at the edge of the chair's curved back.
It didn't work.

"How far could we take the ancient design
and still legitimately keep the reference to its origin?
We agreed the best way to honor the indigenous design was building
a beautiful, comfortable and collectible interpretation
which unquestionably exhibited its source of inspiration.

Construction Notes:

Keeping the elliptical curve of the Mayan zero in the chair's back
while simultaneously making it comfortable entailed repeated attempts for it required the arm to flow seamlessly into the back rest which,
in spite of the curve,
would not push the user's back out of alignment .
The seamless inter-phase of the arm, legs and skirt was also difficult to achieve and required a rounded, turning-in-flight seagull design to properly join these three elements while providing a sensuous rest for the right hand of the user.

Dimensions:

40" High x 28"Wide x 21 ½ “ Deep x 17 ½ " Seat Height
